The Sustainable Future of Agriculture

Sally Flis, PhD, our Director of  Sustainable Ag Programs shares her thoughts on the importance of sustainable agriculture practices and how Nutrien Ag Solutions supports growers in these efforts.

At Nutrien Ag Solutions, we recognize that sustainability practices are incredibly important since good agronomic practices are also sustainable – following 4R nutrient stewardship, conserving soil in the field, and maximizing efficiency are all based in good agronomy and drive sustainable outcomes in the field. Additionally, many downstream companies are looking to report on the outcomes of these practices – and the farmer in the field is the best source of data to calculate these outcomes.

As an ag retailer, we’ve differentiated ourselves by offering programs that give growers options and come with a short-term commitment. This let’s farmers test out what being in a sustainable ag program is like without committing to a 5- or 10-year contract. Our offerings include the use of more sustainable products, technology and digital tools, innovations to promote efficient and data driven agriculture, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

We’re proud to support our growers in their sustainability efforts by making connections to companies interested in paying for outcomes generated in the field, collecting field level data, determining the best field level practices to implement that will drive sustainable outcomes, and helping growers solve production challenges on the ground. We are driven to be the resource that helps farmers do more with less – finding the right products for a more efficient use of inputs (water, nutrients and chemicals) while increasing yields, reducing losses to the environment, and increasing grower profits.

Looking toward the future of sustainable ag, we see the continued implementation of good agronomic practices, measuring what is happening in the field so informed decisions can be made every year, and lots of data collection.
